New Real ID travel policy

Are You Ready for the New REAL ID Travel Policy?

What Exactly is a REAL ID?

A REAL ID-compliant card is not your ordinary state-issued driver's license or ID because it complies with federal security standards. This super ID is usually identified by a star typically marked in the upper right corner. It's interesting to note that some states, like Michigan, issue Enhanced Driver's Licenses (EDLs) instead of REAL IDs. You can recognize these EDLs by a U.S. flag and the word "enhanced" on the ID. Both REAL IDs and EDLs are acceptable for federal purposes.

The Impact of Not Having a REAL ID

If you're planning on boarding a domestic flight or entering a federal facility without a REAL ID or another accepted ID after May 7, 2025, you may experience the following:

However, no worries if you don't have a REAL ID just yet because you can use alternative forms of identification such as a valid U.S. passport, military ID, or DHS trusted traveler card like Global Entry.

Obtaining a REAL ID Made Easy

To apply for a REAL ID, all you need to do is visit your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in person and carry the following documents:

  1. Proof of identity (e.g., passport or birth certificate)
  2. Proof of Social Security number (e.g., Social Security card or W-2 form)
  3. Two proofs of state residency (e.g., utility bills, lease agreements)
  4. Name change documents (if applicable)

Bonus tip: some states allow online submission of these documents before your in-person visit which can significantly expedite the process.
