When your cruise ship docs in Athens, the energy of the city is undeniable - ancient ruins rising beside bustling streets, modern cafes tucked next to archaeological treasures. On our 2024 visit, one site stood out as both awe-inspiring and humbling: the Temple of Olympian Zeus.
A Temple Worth the Wait
Construction of the temple began in the 6th century BC, but political changes and financial troubles stalled progress for centuries. It wasn't until Roman Emperor Hadrian took the reins in the 2nd century AD that it was finally completed - over 700 years later!
At its peak, the temple was the largest in Greece, boasting 104 massive Corinthian columns that soared into the sky. Today, only 15 remain, but their sheer size still makes you stop in your tracks. One column toppled in a storm back in 1852 and still lies dramatically on the ground - an unintentional but unforgettable photo opportunity.

🚨Why It's Worth It
👣Our Takeaway
Touring the site in 2024 gave us chills - it felt like walking in the footsteps of history, connecting with a time when mythology and architecture collided in spectacular fashion. There's something powerful about standing beneath structures that were dreamt up thousands of years ago yet still tower over the modern city.
📸Travel Tip
Plan your visit for early morning or late afternoon. The midday heat in Athens is intense, and the site can get crowded. Visiting at the edges of the day gives you softer light for photos and a much more comfortable experience.
