REAL I.D. & PASSPORTS

Passport & REAL ID Requirements: What You Need to Know Before You Travel

What Is a REAL ID?

The REAL ID is a federally approved form of identification that meets stricter security standards. Starting May 7, 2025, U.S. travelers will need a REAL ID (or a valid passport) to board domestic flights and enter certain federal buildings.

You’ll know it’s a REAL ID if it has a star in the upper right-hand corner of your state-issued driver’s license or ID card.

When You Need a Passport

You’ll need a valid U.S. passport for:

Cruise Tip: Some "closed-loop" cruises (departing and returning to the same U.S. port) may allow a birth certificate and government-issued photo ID — but a passport is always the safest and most flexible option.

I always recommend a passport for all travel — even when it’s not technically required. If you miss your cruise in a foreign port or need to fly home unexpectedly, only a passport will allow it.

Helpful Tips for Managing Travel Documents

1. Renew Early
Standard passport processing can take 8–12 weeks — or longer during peak seasons. If your passport is expiring within 12 months, consider renewing now. Renew Passport

2. Make Copies
Keep both physical and digital copies of your passport and ID. Email a copy to yourself or store securely in the cloud.

3. Consider a Passport Card
A passport card is valid for land and sea travel to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean (not for international air travel). It’s a convenient backup.

4. Track Your Application

5. Need It Fast?

6. Traveling with Children?
Passport rules differ for minors. Children under 16 require both parents’ consent and must appear in person for new passport applications.
